Banning Homemade Lunches At School?

I just read that a school in Chicago is banning homemade lunches unless you have food allergies. That's just plain ridiculous. If you don't qualify for free lunches, then you have to pay $2.25 a day for the lunches. I know we wouldn't have been able to pay that amount for lunches, especially for 3 kids. I'm sure many others can't pay that, either. If they don't buy lunch, the article says, then the kids go hungry.
The school says they are doing this for better nutrition. They seem to think that you can't have a nutritious lunch if you make one at home. We always had nutritious lunches and I packed nutritious lunches for our kids.
Yes, I know there is an obesity problem in the United States, but I think this is going way too far and our government is turning into a dictatorship. Maybe, if the more nutritious foods were more affordable, people would be buying them instead of the less nutritious foods that fill the belly and stop their hunger.
When our kids where in high school, they had a Taco Bell on campus. I didn't like that idea because it was like selling your soul to Taco Bell to get extra funding for the school.
There has to be a better way. What happened to good old common sense in this country? Did it go out the window along with taking responsibility for our own actions?

  1. That's funny because out here they can't afford to buy fresh fruits or vegis for the kids lunches and next year they don't know if they will even be able to provide the lunches.
