I know, I said I would write sooner, but a lot has happened. The biggest reason is because all my photos disappeared and I am not happy about it. Not pouting, just discouraged.
www.facebook.com/Lauras.Bears.Critters , Laura's Bears & Critters is having a contest. You need to keep checking my page for more information.
We decided to plant a garden again this year. We are having a drought up here, but nowhere near like California's or other states. Not much snow for the last couple of years is not a good thing. We made it to 98 today, which is way too hot and much too early. I keep telling Tim we need to move someplace cooler.
Anyway, I will be a good person and write more often and my daughter says when she has a chance, she will try to figure out what my missing photo thing is all about and see if she can fix it.
Remember, check out my Facebook page for information the contest and to see the bears. I don't have a large supply of bears on hand, but I will be making more as well as other things. I only decided on having a contest today, so there is only one posting.
Try not to melt or float away.
I was wrong, people do still read it, so I decided it was time for a revamping. New colors, new layout same thrilling content,(note the sarcasm), now with ads to try to earn a little extra cash. I am also going to try to sell my bears on here in the bear section. So in the meantime, this is a work in progress. Maybe it needs an under construction sign. I had to ask my tech savvy kid for help, because I sure am not tech savvy.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07677610848002972808noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5222106650469469134.post-73933274955905691262014-06-01T10:40:00.000-07:002014-06-01T21:18:55.636-07:00I Know It's Been A Long Time, But... I know, it has been a couple of months since I have written anything, but there is a really good reason for that. Nothing ever happens here. I have thought about writing something new quite a few times, but what can I say? So, here goes, I will write about what is happening around here.
We bought some new chicks and a couple of white broad breasted turkeys in March. We now have two coops, the breakfast and the dinner coop. One of the turkeys is a definite tom. I was calling him Thanksgiving, but yesterday I changed his name to Godzilla. He walks on everyone else and he reminds me of how Godzilla stomps on cars and buildings. The turkeys are also getting pretty ugly.
We have two Buff Orpingtons that are going to go into the breakfast coop, even thought one of them is a rooster, and we have 10 New Hampshire Reds. One of those is going into the breakfast coop. One is so gentle, I pick her up and she just relaxes and doesn't struggle at all.
Too bad my parakeet, Frosty, isn't like her. I have had Frosty for almost a year, and I still can't get her finger trained. I have tried all the ways you hear, but no luck. I can pet her, but that's it. I have had birds before and they got finger trained, but not Frosty. Maybe it's her name that did it. Since I named her Frosty, maybe she is just giving me the cold shoulder.
We planted a small garden this year, because we really need to build up our soil, but we also needed the garden. I was beginning to think I had a bad packet of bean seeds, but after tow weeks, they have finally started coming up. I know I didn't plant them too deep and I have planted this kind before. I was getting ready to go replant them.
I have been busy making and selling teddy bears in flannel pajamas. I have three left to sell and am making eight more.
Tan bear wearing sheep jammies. It isn't swirled either. All bears and clothes are machine washable and dryable. I am selling them for $40.00 each which includes US shipping. I even started a Face Book page for them.https://www.facebook.com/pages/Lauras-Bears-Critters/624151867673434
So, now you know what I have been up to. I have a black Shetland fleece in the living room that I need to
wash and spin. The neighbors behind us gave it to me. The sheared
the sheep before they butchered him. I also have shirts and
shorts to make. So much to do and so little ambition.
I saw a bobbin this afternoon, and I really hope that means spring is on the way. We are in mud season right now, and I can tell you, it gets old really fast. We are suppose to have more rain tomorrow.
The ground, for the most part, is firming up, so at least we don't sink up to our ankles. The only green I have seen popping up was a Russian Thistle. I'm really looking forward to spring. We did get to 61 today, with sun and it was really nice.
I've been mailing off teddy bears that I have sold and last Saturday, when I mailed a couple more boxes the local Post Mistress ask me if I brought in any to show. Of course, I thought about it, but didn't, so when I mail another box tomorrow, I will bring in a couple for her to see.
Not much is happening around here an I am thinking about spring cleaning, but we all know how much fun that is. I must admit though, that I don't have any clothes waiting to be folded, not even those towels.
We are trying to decide if we are going to have a garden this year and if we are, what to plant. I suppose the usual. Some of our fruit trees might need replaced, because some buck decided to mangle them with his antlers. The joys of wildlife.
Now for fun, I need to figure out what's for dinner tonight. Any ideas?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07677610848002972808noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5222106650469469134.post-71974901929408060332014-02-19T16:36:00.002-08:002014-02-19T16:36:31.004-08:00Sometimes, I'm Sure I Must Have A Screw Loose Being the bored, unemployed person that I am, I had a brilliant idea. Actually, I had the idea a couple of years ago, but just started doing it. Besides the loose screw, I'm slow too.
People seemed to like the bears wearing flannel pajamas I have been making, so I decided to make them and try to sell them. Their faces are cuter than Smirky bear who's pictures is in a previous post. I haven't invested much into them so far because I have a lot of fabric in my craft stash, and I have even sold a few. It's a little extra money and something to do. I don't work on them everyday, but days I do work on them I spend a lot of time making them.
I was going to make them and donate them to the children's hospital, but from everything I have read, hospitals only want new, in the original packaging. I'm still going to check into it some more. Also, there are always craft fairs around, so I figure if I work on them all year, I should have a half way decent amount made to sell at the end of the year for the holidays. There is always Craiglist, too. I have been told I need my own website, but I haven't decided on that yet. I don't want to be committed to making tons of them and get bear burn out. See, I must have a screw loose.
Luckily, we haven't had all the snow like the East has had. We have had snow, then rain and now mud season has come really early. We are do for more snow and rain tonight and tomorrow. Perfect weather for staying in and working on bears.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07677610848002972808noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5222106650469469134.post-6080732522358561312014-01-12T13:14:00.000-08:002014-01-12T13:17:33.970-08:00I Really Want To Play A Musical Instrument I really want to play a musical instrument. When I was in elementary and middle school. I took violin lessons. All we ever played was a song called Concerto Grosso. Four years of the same song was really no fun, and I do admit, I didn't practiced all I should have because I really hated that song. I have no idea who the composer was. I did learn in those years of school orchestra lessons that the teacher was an identical twin and he and his brother married identical twin sisters and the each had 4 kids who oddly enough looked really related. I also learned how to read music and play the violin. I didn't play well, but I could play it.
I also have a really pretty autoharp I would like to know how to play, but then again, there is that finger and string problem. Plus, no one seems to think you need lessons, "you just pick it up and play". I know there is more to it than that. One day, I might find someone who gives lessons.
When I was a freshman in high school, I took one year of guitar lessons. I learned more about reading music that I already knew and learned that I can't play the guitar because my fingertips split and bleed and really hurt when fingering the guitar.
A really, really long time ago, when I was 17, I got my first recorder. I really wanted to play it, but hated the sound, and it wasn't all my playing, which admittedly wasn't good. Way back then, I couldn't find many books to teach yourself the recorder. Now, with the wonders of the internet, I can find many books and videos on youtube. I still don't like the sound, so now, I have a collection of instruments I cant really play.
My recorder collection. From right to left are 2 Soprano recorders, and Alto recorder
and a tenor recorder. The white recorder is my first one. I was really trying to
learn you to play it, but with a toddler in the house, I didn't want it broken, so I bought the clear
orange one. Soprano recorders are in the key of C.
I decided to get the Alto recorder because it is an F and has a deeper tone. It still wasn't right, but I
am pretty sure I will learn to play it eventually. I hope. The fingering is the same, just the notes are different.
The last recorder, I just got and it is a Tenor, in the key of C. Everything I learned on the
Soprano recorders I can do on the tenor. It has such a nice, low mellow sound. I really like
playing it. I got the tenor recorder right before the new year started. I am practicing everyday and am now working
on my 8th note. It has been so long since I was able to read music, I had to start over with that. I can play a very mournful Red River Valley.
My brain and fingers are getting better at working together, so that's a good thing, and the dogs don't howl either.
With a C recorder, I should be able to play a wide range of songs when I learn more notes. I really want to learn how to
play The Tennessee Waltz and Moon River. I am making progress, but I really wish I was younger, so I would learn things easier and have a longer time to enjoy playing the instruments, not that I plan on kicking the bucket soon.
Maybe I have just hit the right time in my life to learn because I also actually like practicing now versus when I was younger.

Smirky Bear

At long last, I have made the bear clothes. I had to make another bear to see if the clothes would fit, and I named him Smirky Bear because his face looks like he is smirking. He originally was named Damn Bear because I was having trouble with sewing his feet and legs because the directions on the pattern and the diagrams are flakey. I had the same problem when I made bears for the five grand kids and since I didn't think I would be making anymore bears, I didn't change the directions on the pattern. I didn't write down the changes this time either, but I did use three different colors of fabric to show how the feet go.

The bears have flannel pajamas and slippers, summer pajamas out of the backing I used for the quilts I made the kids for Christmas last year and three other short sleeved shirts and pairs of pants. I used Velcro on the shirts because it is easier for little fingers to maneuver than tiny buttons or snaps. The shirts can be worn with the opening in the front or the back. I also changed the shirt pattern because the shirt was a pullover shirt and it would have been hard to get it over the bear's heads. I know, I should have made some dresses for Ashlynn and Michaela's bears, but I didn't because I didn't want to make tiny underwear for them. Later, I might add some dresses and sunsuits for girl bears, but then again, I might not. There is nothing wrong with pants. The kids can roll up the pants legs if they want their bears to wear shorts.
By nice, I mean a little hot chocolate with my marshmallows. I eat the marshmallows with a spoon and if the hot chocolate is still hot, I add more marshmallows to be eaten with the spoon before I drink the chocolate when it has cooled some.

My nightly cup of hot chocolate

The other night I noticed something I hadn't noticed on the bag before, and I do admit I am not the most observant person at times.

I have never noticed the warning on the back of the bag. All these years, I have been eating my marshmallows wrong. When I eat them straight out of the bag, I always eat more than one at a time, but I am usually sitting down when I eat them because I am watching TV. Yes, I do realize the warning is for little children, but I am someone's child, just an old one and I am not small.

Then I noticed the part about closing the bag after it has been opened to keep the marshmallows soft. When I was a kid, probably not eating marshmallows the right way, I learned that when you open something it generally needs closed if it is not used up or you aren't finished with it. I always put my opened bag in a gallon size zippered plastic bag, but wouldn't it make sense to have the marshmallow bag have a zippered opening to close the bag?

It's pretty sad that there has to be this warning and handy information because some people lack common sense and might sue Kraft.

As you know from the last blog, I had ankle fusion surgery on my left ankle. I thought everything was going fine, but boy was I wrong.
Three days before I was supposed to have the cast changed, I woke up with excruciating pain in my leg. The next morning, I called the Drs. office and they got in me that afternoon. They suspected blood clots in my leg. As it turns out, I had three DVT's in my left leg, one below my knee, when in my thigh and one high up in the groin. As if that wasn't bad enough, in the emergency room I had a CT scan and they found a clot in each lung. I was told after, that if I had waited to go to the Dr. for my scheduled appointment, I probably wouldn't be here now. I ended up spending three days in the Acute Care ward of the hospital. Loads of fun.
I had to start giving myself Lovenox shots in my abdomen to help thin my blood faster. Those shots twice a day were no fun at all. Once again, things couldn't go smoothly because I got Cellulitis from all the bruising from the shots. Of course, that isn't enough either. My asthma really kicked in and I had to have breathing therapy and breathing treatment four times a day.
I have to be on Warfarin until the end of the year for the clots. I go back to the Dr. Nov. 4 to hopefully get this air cast off. Ok, it is removable, but I want it off forever. I am tired of it. I have been walking around the house with it off and I feel much better since I have been doing that.
I can honestly say that the pain is actually less in my leg since the surgery and what pain there is, it is from the surgery. I need to go to physical therapy to learn how to walk right again.
As I was laying there in bed I thought of all the things I could be doing if I could walk around. I thought I could teach myself how to knit while in bed, but didn't. I did watch MacGyver on Netflix.
I almost feel like my old self now and I have to be careful not to over do it.
So that is why I have slacked off on the blog writing. Just so you know things are still normal, I really need to get busy on those darned bear clothes. There are still towels to be folded and floors to be vacuumed. I am working on it all, but not very fast. Winter will be here soon, and I will have plenty of time.
Today, I really started working with finger training Frosty. I have made progress today. Tomorrow, I am making and canning Salsa Verde.
I have decided I really like my iPad mini I was on it all the time. I am typing this on my iPad with a keyboard our son and daughter-in-law gave me. I still need to figure out how to get pictures onto my blog from here. I found some of my photos, but not the ones I was looking for.
Anyway, I am alive and kicking and ready to bore you all once again.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07677610848002972808noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5222106650469469134.post-49284040398736881602013-08-10T13:45:00.000-07:002013-08-10T13:45:01.651-07:00Just Vegetating Life is duller than usual around here, because on July 26, I had ankle surgery to fuse my ankle, and I get to stay off of it for 8 weeks. I get to hang out in bed and be really bored. I have been reading and wasting a lot of time playing on my iPad. Thursday, when I had the splint removed and a gazillion staples removed, I also got a nifty green non-weight bearing cast. Now for fun, I can be up for 3 whole hours at a time and then it's back to bed or the couch. If I do alright with the first 3 hours, I can get up for another 3 hours in the evening. Such fun!
Today, I decided I was going to try sitting in my wheelchair with my foot on the ottoman and see how that works. So far, so good.
Of course, since we are having a heat wave right now, the compressor went out on our heat pump, so that means no AC. We have to get it fixed before winter, because that would mean ho heat, and we sure don't want that.
Tim was looking out the window last night and a coyote walked about 3 feet from the window, headed for the chicken coop. Of course, by the time he got out there to take care of it, it was gone. Luckily, it didn't get into the coop.
We had a really bad lightening and thunderstorm last night as well. The lightening was so close and you could tell it was hitting the ground. Luckily, no fires were started here, but it sure did light up the world. The thunder was so loud it actually shook the house. The dogs were not happy at all.
Speaking of the dogs, Chip has decided if I am wheeling around to slow for his liking, he just runs under the chair as I'm wheeling around. No, I haven't run over him yet, but I did run over the toes on my good foot. Not something I would recommend doing again.
Jake sticks really close to me. When we got Jake from the shelter, I was in the same wheelchair, because I broke my leg at that time and that is why I had my ankle fused this time. Anyway, As I'm trying to go someplace and not run over Chip, Jake is in the way. You would think that he would just turn around and walk, but nooo, he has to backup the whole time until I can get past him. Both dogs follow me into the bathroom. What do they think they are going to do, help? They are good dogs and taking good care of me.
I had planned to get a lot of crafting things done, but I'm either not in the mood or it will take longer than my 3 hours of having my foot down.
I finally got off of level 88 on Candy Crush and now I am stuck on level 91. I have no idea why I keep playing it, but I do, even though I have quit playing it many time. Stupid game!
Next, I'll play Facebook slots and figure I'll bet really high, and when I run out of "money" I'll just delete them and go onto something new. Wouldn't you know it, I keep winning. It would be really nice if I could do that on real slot machines. Of course, that is hard earned money, that I don't want to lose too fast so I bet really low. Goes to show you, to win big you have to play big, and I'm just cheap. My 3 hours are up and I can feel my leg swelling, so I guess it's time to go put it up somewhere, right after I try to find something to eat.
I hope everyone is having more fun than I am.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07677610848002972808noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5222106650469469134.post-11534074099532463932013-07-17T11:39:00.001-07:002013-07-17T11:39:58.615-07:00Daniel And Amy Got Married I know, it has been a long time since I have written anything, but sometimes I think, who, other than my family reads this blog anyway. But then again, that is the reason I started writing a blog in the first place.
Daniel and Amy were getting married June 29, so we left here June 26, since we were driving. Of course, there was a terrible heat wave at that time and our air conditioner that worked when we left, decided to stop working. The temperatures weren't too bad until we hit CA. and then it was just hot and getting hotter the closer we got to Southern CA.
We eventually made it to CA and Daniel and Amy's apartment in Bellflower. We met a rude woman who said we didn't belong in the gated parking area of the apartment building even though it did have marked guest parking spaces. We backed into one and went in to relax. That night, I heard what sounded like a car hitting another, but figured it was on the busy street they lived on.
We didn't see much of Amy, which we expected since we got there on the 28th and she had lots of last minute things to do. We took Amy to meet up with a friend and then Daniel took Tim and I to lunch. We had Mexican food. Up here in WA, we just can't find good Mexican food. I am used to Tex-Mex food since I grew up in El Paso, TX, but Tim grew up in CA and knows what Mexican food tastes like.
Tim and I really felt out of place and like tourists in CA now, since we had been gone for 7 years. You know you are in another world when all the buildings have bars on the windows and doors. Anyway, like all good tourists and Daniel being a good tour guide, we hit up a big liquor store. I know, who stops there? The price of liquor in WA is really high and I wanted to get a big bottle of Vodka for making more vanilla extract and I had read it works great for killing bugs and for cleaning, so, why not. When we got back to the apartment, I noticed someone had hit the front of the van. We wondered if it was the rude woman who told us we didn't belong there. The damage was small, just the bumper was pushed in and the hood wasn't quite right.
Daniel took us to Downtown Disneyland that night and we ate at the Rainforest Café. Tim and I each had a Margarilla, which is a margarita made with orange sherbet. It was good and we will have to make some at home. Every half hour, there was a "thunderstorm" and all the Disney animals made noise. We watched the nightly fireworks display and then went back to Daniel's. It was a really good firework show. It had been a long time since we had seen a firework show and fireworks have gotten bigger and better.
The wedding was in Redlands, CA and once again, it was really hot. It was a really nice wedding ceremony. Amy promised to make Daniel eat vegetables once in a while and Daniel promised to make Amy eat a donut once in a while. It was a very relaxed ceremony. Daniel also had a pocket full of Kleenex for Amy. They were going to have pictures taken outside, but it was just way too hot, so they were taken inside. Amy and Daniel have a really good bunch of friends that are more like family.
Before the wedding Alyssa, David and kids got ready in our hotel room. It was really nice seeing them, but it wasn't nearly long enough.
My brother, Gary and his wife Myrna were there and it was nice seeing them as well.
Tim's dad and his wife were also there and we hadn't seen them for a long time, either.
We left bright and early, but not early enough for Tim, to go see my parents in Pahrump, NV. It was a hot drive, but not nearly as hot as the drive to CA.
We had a nice visit with them and saw my sister, Donna and her husband Ron, a couple of times.
When we left, we were going to go see Tim's sister, Julie, because it was too early to stop by and see her when we were going. We still didn't see her for long because we really wanted to drive at night when it was cooler.
Leaving Reno, NV headed for Marysville, CA traffic came to a stop. There was a mudslide that had just happened. We have no idea what was going on, but Julie did when we called her. All the traffic was diverted off the freeway onto a side street and when we got to the end of the street, we had to turn around and go the way we came and get on the freeway going the opposite direction then we wanted to go. The "short" detour we had to go on took 5 hours. At least it was really pretty going through the Sierras.

We saw this really pretty waterfall up there.
At one point, we were being tailgated by what we thought was a pick up truck. Tim pulled over so it could pass and it pulled in behind us, but not on top of us. It just sat there, so we drove on. A couple of minutes later, the same bright lights were shining in the windows. It got really close and then passed us and we noticed it was a white cargo van. Needless to say, we were really relieved when it passed us.
A few miles down the road, the same lights were behind us again and we were beginning to think we were in one of those horror movies with the crazed people that prey on innocent travelers.

It stayed behind us for quite a while again, tailgating of course, and then when we got to a town that had freeway on ramps, it veered off onto an exit. We were really wondering if it was going to come back, but it didn't. We breathed a sigh of relief, but kept an eye out for it anyway.
We finally made it home. It's always nice to get home, but it we are glad we got to see Daniel and Amy get married and saw family, even though it was for a short while.
About the only thing that has happened is Amy, Daniel and Michaela moving to Colorado. It's very quiet. I'm trying to put the put things back where they were before they moved in. I'm also making the spare room into a sewing/craft room. I am making progress.
May didn't get the memo that said it is spring. Wednesday, we had a high of 45 and that night a low of 32. So far, it looks like most of our tiny fruit survived. We still haven't planted anything in the garden since we will be gone for a little bit the end of June. Barbara did plant every seed in her seed packages and is going to give use the plants after we get back. I have no idea what we are going to do with a gazillion tomato plants.
I have an over abundance of eggs. I don't like eggs and only use them for cooking. Tim doesn't really eat that many. I don't have enough to sell, so we have given some to a neighbor. I really don't need 36 eggs. I know, that's not many compared to what some people get, but for us, it's too many. I have 5 hens and one or two might end up in the freezer. Of course during the winter, I end up buying eggs because the laying has really slowed down to a slow trickle.
Our assorted berry bushes are doing great this year and hopefully, we'll get a good crop if the birds don't get them first.
I finally have a lilac bush. I bought it for myself for Mother's Day. We would like to get a lot more and plant them along the fence line behind us and along the property line on the side where there is no fence. Deer aren't suppose to like lilacs.
Now you can see for yourselves that we are really boring people and nothing exciting happens.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07677610848002972808noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5222106650469469134.post-17954633368264382492013-04-18T09:52:00.000-07:002013-04-18T09:52:06.585-07:00Wile E. Coyote Just Ran By I'm sitting in my chair, looking out of the window, trying to think of something to write about, when all of a sudden a very healthy looking coyote ran through the yard. It was 9:15 AM. It was in such a hurry that it was panicking when it couldn't get through the fence. Luckily, no one and no dogs were out. Once it saw the llamas behind us us, it quickly went a different direction. I guess llamas really do work as guard animals. I didn't see a road runner go by before the coyote.
There are many baby goats behind us. One little black kid seems to be the leader of the other kids. It gets on top of the big wooden spool and jumps in the air and dances around on it's hind legs showing off, having a good old time. The goats do play king of the spool, but the little black kid always wins and seems to rub it in when all the other kids are knocked off. I miss having goats, but it's much cheaper and easier on my poor old body watching the neighbors goats.
The pregnant doe hasn't been back lately, but others have. I noticed some deer ate the little wild plum tree that is in a flower pot right by the front door. I've been growing it since we cut it off of a wild plum tree we came across on one of our drives. It was about a foot high, and now it's looking like a tree and ready to plant somewhere.
I bought an iPad Mini not too long ago and have been playing with it a lot trying to figure out the things I can do on it. I really wish you still got paper owner's manuals these days. Yesterday, I discovered I can check library books out on it, so this morning, I did. It would be nice if I could change the font on the library book, but you either can't or I just haven't figured out how. Either way, I can live with large letters.
Rumor has it that next Wednesday, it's suppose to get to 69, WooHoo!! Spring might eventually get her after all. I don't think we are planting a garden this year until after we get home from Danny and Amy's wedding the end of June. I'll miss all the potatoes we plant.
Well, I guess I'll go fold that basket of towels for fun. I'm still waiting for the clothes to come folded right out of the dryer.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07677610848002972808noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5222106650469469134.post-86498499963137917212013-03-22T10:07:00.001-07:002013-03-22T11:46:05.280-07:00Spring Is Here, Spring Is Hear

At long last, spring is here. It's also hear. You can hear the birds and the hail and the baby animals behind us. You can't really tell by our below freezing temps at night, but we have been in the mid 40's to the lower 50's, so that means spring. The fields and yards are turning green. It's funny, but the grass is green under the snow. I still haven't seen our first buttercup of the year yet. On the down side, spring is also mud season and boy is it muddy.
I took a picture of one of Phyllis' pointy eggs next to the other eggs we are getting. She still lays eggs like this, so I guess they are normal for her. I really need to get busy and bake because I have a lot of eggs. I don't have enough to sell.

Since it is spring, we have been getting our usual rain and hail to help the mud situation along. We had this hail the other day.

The storm lasted about 20 minutes and the hail was still there the next morning. It was about thumb nail size and I guess technically, it was gropel.

Soon, hopefully, the ground will be firm enough to till up the garden a few times. It's still way too early to plant anything. The strawberries that have leaves piled on top of them are doing well.

I'm going to plant the kind of peas I usually plant this year, because the peas I planted last year stay hard as a rock even after pressure cooking them. Teach me to plant something other then the old tried and true.

The other day, I went into the laundry room and found this. There are feet under that big dog in the clothes basket. It didn't bother Jake, who just kept on eating. Those are Michaela's feet. Her trusty bunny is in the basket with her. Clothes baskets are such fun when you're a kid.

I'm making progress playing my assorted musical instruments. Michaela wants to dance all the time when I play them. For some reason, she doesn't like the alto recorder and always tells me to put it back. I figure since the dogs don't howl when I play, I'm doing alright.

It's still winter, and today, it's snowing. We were suppose to only get 1-3" but I think I can safely say we will be getting more than that since we already have about 4" of the new wet fluffy kind of snow. We do have 100% chance of snow.
On my last blog, I have no idea why it posted the way it did. I did everything like I usually do, but I guess it needed a change, too.
I am making progress playing the recorder and tin whistle. My mind is having trouble remembering the name of the notes, but my fingers remember where they are suppose to be to make the notes, so I guess it's progress.
I have made a little progress hula hooping. It's a heavier and bigger adult hula hoop so it's harder, for me anyway, to keep up. Everytime Michaela sees me get it out, she has to call Amy over and she sits on the floor on Amy's lap and laugh at me. It reminds me of when we were kids and we laughed at my mom as she was doing Jack LaLane exercises that were on the TV. In my older years, I feel bad about doing that.
It's that time of year when everyone is tired of snow and are planning what to plant in their gardens.
Some people in town have even tilled their gardens up already, They get less snow than we get. Our garden happens to be frozen and under a bunch of snow. We are trying to figure out ways to keep our spinach crop from getting dirt all over the leaves. It doesn't rinse off that well just running it under water. We really need a green house and/or hoop frames, cold frames.
Phyllis the White Crested Black Polish chicken has finally started to lay eggs that are usable. She laid 2 others, but the shells were so soft they got walked on and broke. Anyway, Phyllis lays the longest, narrowest eggs I have ever seen. If I were a chicken, that would be the kind I'd want to push out. They are a very elongated egg shape and very white.
I still haven't started making bear clothes yet. I have them added to the top of my long list of things to make.
As you can see, nothing exciting is going on. It might be nice to have some kind of good excitement once in a while. We can do without the bad kind of excitement.
Winter is still here. Our high temperatures have been below freezing for a few weeks now. Luckily, we are suppose to warm up and have temperatures above freezing now, around 33 degrees. That is warm compared to what it has been.
This doe stopped by to eat apple peelings we had just put out. She is looking pregnant. Se has been coming around here with her mother since she was a little spotted fawn.
Snow is in the forecast with our warmer weather. It's really too bad that snow is so nice and pretty and then it gets so dirty and ugly.
In another 2-3 months all this pretty white snow will be a melted, muddy mess. About this same time, the doe might have given birth and hopefully, she'll come around with her new fawn.
Our son, Daniel, and his girlfriend, Amy, got engaged Dec. 28. We welcome her to the family. Amy fits right in. You saw pictures of them on one of the past blogs not too long ago. They plan on a wedding in Sept. Alyssa and David have also set a wedding date, sometime in the spring of 2014. Alyssa and David have been together for so long, he's already family.
For some reason I'm having problems getting pictures on here, but you've all seen snow pictures before anyway.
I bought another Native American style flute, this one is in the key of D and is made from birch. I was going to put a picture of it up, but no luck.
I'm thinking about starting another quilt top, but I need to get those bear clothes done. I had patterns for a 15 and 19 inch bear. I chose to make the 15 inch bear. I should have chosen the 19 inch bear because they have better clothes. A long time ago, I could find free downloadable patterns for bear clothes on the internet, but can I find them when I want them? Maybe, I'll try to shrink the patterns to fit a smaller bear.
See, I told you we were boring people. Hopefully nothing too exciting happens, because we like quiet, not necessarily boring.
Finally, at long last, I have finished the five Christmas quilts I made for the five grand kids. I thought they turned out really well for my first quilting attempt.
I made the backing in their favorite colors, except for Nathan who didn't have one yet, so multicolored stripes was his. Nathan has since decided his favorite color is green Luckily, there are green stripes in the backing.
I should have smoothed them out before I took the pictures, especially Ashlynn's, but I didn't notice it until after I took the pictures.
I intend to make more quilts eventually, but now I have to make those promised bear clothes for the bears I made for the kids last Christmas.
I've worked on the quilts for so long, it feels kind of funny not having to work on them anymore. Four of the quilts were mailed to Arizona, but I'm pretty sure they will be after Christmas quilts. One day, I just might get things mailed in time. I really try, it just never works out that way.
I think I started in May, took a break and did other things and now I'm back at it again. I am making 5 quilts and I finished the second one last night.
Since this is the first time I have ever quited, it is also a learning experience for the next quilts I'm going to make. I've learned not to sew the batting to the top and then sew the back to it all. It sounded like a good idea, but as I'm top stitching it with the sewing machine, the top spreads out more. I've also learned it's probably not a good idea to sew it all together until it's top stitched. The quilts have turned out nice for my first attempt. I did try to sew them all together, with right sides facing leaving a hole and then turning everything inside out, but that really didn't work. I have made very nice borders by folding the backing over it all. I like them better this way, too. I had to take apart the first quilt which was loads of fun and then it took me 3 tries to get the thing all pined together nice and neat. I didn't want to do it on the floor because I'd never get up again and I'd have a lot of help with the dogs and Michaela, so I use the kitchen island and just shift the whole thing as I go.
Micheal is very worried and anxiously waiting for clothes for the bears I made them last year. He even asked my mom if she knew if I was working on the clothes when they went to their house for Thanksgiving. So, after quilts, it's bear clothes. I'm also crocheting slippers for my parents and still need to make the pants for Amy and Alyssa that they have requested. I'm now positive my list is never ending. It does give me something to do and snow will be here soon so I'll be stuck in the house except for my big outing to collect the eggs.
We (Tim) finally caught a mouse and so far, it looks like it was the only one.
It's been raining for days now and walking outside reminds me of walking on a sponge, not that I've ever walked on a sponge.
I guess I'd better get busy and start working on the quilts again. I'll take pictures of them all when I have finished. I hope it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to mail them. Four of them go to Arizona and the fifth one stays here.
I wonder whet brilliant ideas I'll get for next years Christmas gifts for the grand kids? Gift cards?
I know it's just me, but it seems colder this year. I know it actually has been colder, but that's not the reason. Maybe my old bones and healed broken bones just don't like cold this year.
Yes, I know, we chose to live up here where it snows. I still like looking at it through the windows. It's so pretty and you have that kind of hush you only get from snow. I'm pretty sure as the fall progresses into winter I should, hopefully, warm up.
Poor Jake says snow is for the birds and Chip thinks it's great as long as it doesn't fall off of the trees or some other object and scare him. The chickens are doing fine so far. Michaela is really impressed with all the white out side and the snow on the floor the dogs bring in. Michaela has reached the take your clothes off stage in life, so she runs around in blanket sleepers with a snap over the zipper pull at the neck because she hasn't figured out how to get out of those, yet.
I'm almost done dehydrating potatoes and then it's freeze and dehydrate all the carrots in the refrigerator.
I've decided we have an invisible mouse that just leaves droppings behind. You'd think it would step on and stick to a sticky mouse trap eventually, wouldn't you?
I have all 5 quilt tops sewn together and names and dates embroidered on them and I'll start the filling and back part tomorrow. I'm just going to tie them together because it sounds the fastest and easiest and since they are my first quilts, I'll take the easy way and work up to harder.
Micheal says the bears I made for the grand kids last year still need clothes. My list of things to make just gets longer and wouldn't you know it? I have towels to fold. I'm still waiting for the magic clothes folding dryer. My excuse now is I've been sick and just don't feel like it and we all know where to find them if one is needed.
I made powdered laundry detergent a couple of weeks ago and it seems to work very well. The clothes are cleaner and softer and once again I am using white vinegar for fabric softener. I've used it before, but I think I will all the time now.
You should all prepare yourselves because eventually there will be snow pictures up here again.
Also pictures of these tiny, tiny red bugs that should up after one of the last rains. Oh well, that's it for now. Goodnight.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07677610848002972808noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5222106650469469134.post-44926350686146268102012-10-25T12:09:00.002-07:002012-10-25T14:25:28.867-07:00Just Great!! We Have Mice When Tim was rototilling the garden in, he noticed he went over a few mouse nests. Wouldn't you know it, they have moved into the house. We haven't found where they have come in, just the signs of them.
The first place they were noticed were in Tim's spare room. Next it was the drawer under the oven where I keep my cookie sheets. Then it was the pantry and in the bathroom cabinet, under the sinks in our bathroom. Today, it was under the cabinet under the kitchen sink where we keep the trash can.
Tim put sticky mouse traps where the mice signs were, but no mice on the traps. Maybe we need to put some peanut butter in the middle of them. He did notice last night that there were little foot prints in a trap and it was a few feet away from where he put it. I think they are little field mice instead of your usual house mouse. More traps will be put out.
The pantry was taken apart and everything taken out of boxes. It's a good thing I like glass jars and collect decorative cans. When we lived in California, we had a mouse that ate a chunk of the concrete floor in the pantry trying to make a hole.
We don't want to put poison out because of Michaela and pets. I can't convince Tim we need a cat. I have been trying to repel the little critters with peppermint oil in containers where the mice have been. I read that peppermint oil and lavender are suppose to repel mice. I have some lavender potpourri I'll put under our sink.
I know most people get mice in the house at one time or another, but I'd be really happy if they skipped us. Since we live in the country and have been here for 4 years, I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later, but I really wish it hadn't.
It can get pretty confusing when there are 2 Daniels and 2 Amys in the same house (our daughter Amy and her fiance Daniel are still living with us).
We had a really nice, but short, visit, only 3 1/2 days. We did a lot in those 3 1/2 days, but we never did go in search of moose for them to see. I don't think Daniel having a deer pop out of nowhere while he was driving counts. At least the rental car's breaks worked.
We went to see Daniel's grandmother and then off to Walmart. Yes, everyone needs to check out Walmarts where ever they are. Actually, we went to get one day fishing licenses for Daniel and Amy so we could go fishing the next day. That night we played with the Wii. Us old folks had sore arms after playing. My arm wouldn't have been so sore if my boxing opponent, Steve, would have just stay down.
Wednesday, not as bright and early as Tim would have liked it, we were off to go out for breakfast and a day of fishing. Wouldn't you know it, we didn't get Amy's fishing license because we were off getting munchies. Stopped at Bi-Mart for her license and then to Subway. We got to Fan Lake and ate. Since it was a week day, it was practically deserted.
Daniel and Tim went in the canoe first and Amy and I stood on the boat loading ramp. Amy doesn't touch worms, so her hook was baited before the guys left. Wouldn't you know it, as soon as the guys left, Amy caught a fish. It was HUGE!! I didn't know how I'd hold onto it to take it off of the hook. Luckily, the huge fish feel off of the worm and hook as I reeled it in. The huge fish might have been a whole 3 inches, if that big. Me, I just had fish eat my worms and caught seaweed. I was really good at catching seaweed.
We left Fan Lake and stopped by Eloika Lake on the way home. I still only caught seaweed, while everyone else caught fish. Boy, was it smokey from all the fires. We finally left because of all the smoke and because Amy and I were tired of standing up. We did see a freshwater otter in all the water plants. It was either that, or a lake monster. We know it wasn't a beaver. That evening, it was more Wii. Yes, we do really exciting things at our house.
Thursday, we went to see the new Resident Evil movie. Tim and I must be getting old because the movie was sooo loud. There were only 7 people in the theater, did they really need it so loud? We had dinner at Five Guys hamburgers. They were really good. Dessert at Baskin Robbins, which is always good. We were going to go bowling after the movie, but it was about time for the leagues to play, so we were out of luck. We eventually bowled at the bowling alley in Deer Park. It was a fun night, and we stayed out way past our bedtime.
Before Daniel and Amy left, Daniel wanted to try riding Tim's motorcycle because he's thinking of getting one. As he was riding, I thought too bad he's on our rough driveway to practice on, but he did fine.
Amy gave me one of her big, adult size hula hoops because I have decided this winter, I'm really going to work on getting in shape and losing a lot of weight. I was looking at hula hoop exercise on youtube and once I get the hang of keeping the hoop up, I should be able to do the exercise, plus they are low impact so I should be OK. It was so much easier hula hooping when I was a kid than it is now. I was really good at it as a kid. I will get the hang of it though. If kids can do it, how hard can it be?
Tonight with our chicken, we had some of our homegrown blue potatoes. Ours turned out purple. Because of all the rain we had right after we planted our potatoes, some didn't grow very big and were ready to harvest early. We still have more to harvest, hopefully they will be bigger.
I cut the potatoes and treated them just like any other potatoes I intended to mash, so here they are cut and read to boil.
They boiled just fine, so I drained them and made them into mashed potatoes the same way I have made mashed potatoes in all my years of making them. According to the blue potato people, the mashed potatoes were supposed to be a nice sky blue. These weren't.

The mashed potatoes turned out gray, almost like concrete. They mashed up to a nice, light, fluffy concrete.
We did notice that if they set for even the shortest time, they really did turn out to be concrete like. You could pick up your whole serving of mashed potatoes with your hands and they'd stay in the same shape.
The texture was grainier than other potatoes and left your tongue feeling kind of fuzzy.

Blue and white mashed potatoes

We had some left over mashed potatoes made from russet potatoes and you can see the color difference. Once again, weird.
I won't be making mashed blue potatoes anymore, but they were just fine when I mixed them with white and purple skinned potatoes and just boiled, drained and buttered them.
The blue potatoes might be alright as potato salad and I did read they made great french fries. I'm going to give them a shot as french fries, so I'll let you know how they turn out.
Yes, I know, it's been a long time since I've written anything. I've been busy. We had company for a little over a week and once again, it's that time of year again. Yup, harvesting time. I haven't even finished the last quilt top and Christmas is coming way too fast.
I dehydrate most of what we grow, and my trusty old dehydrator died in the middle of dehydrating last year. Amy did find a replacement for me at a garage sale, but after using it once, I know why it was being sold. It didn't dehydrate food, it cooked it. It had no temperature adjustment, neither did my old one, but I had that one figured out.

dehydrating red onion slices

This year, we bought the 80 liter commercial food dehydrator from Cabela's, and so far, it's great. I get so much done much faster than before. The down side is, it takes so much longer to fill it up, but I can live with that.
The first thing I dehydrated was about 20 pounds of zucchini and it took about 6 hours. I probably could have dehydrated it on a higher temperature and been done faster, but I was happy with 6 hours. I got it all done in one shot instead of days.
Now, I am onto mass quantities of onions. It's a perfect time to do it now because it's cooler and I can leave all the windows open. One day, we will have a back porch, hopefully and enclosed back porch so I can dehydrate out there. So far, I have 3 3/4 quart jars full of dehydrated onion rings that I have vacuumed sealed with my vac and seal. Later, when I need them, I chop a jar up and have chopped onions. I'll make my own onion powder this year.
Our potatoes are being harvested, too. So much rain early in the season didn't help. We are getting small potatoes, but that's better than no potatoes. The all blue potatoes are interesting. Next time I use some, I'll take a picture of them.
I've alos been busy picking, shelling, blanching and freezing tons of peas. There are so many more to be picked. The green beans are next. I don't even like green beans, but Tim does. These will also be frozen and divided up into 2-3 person servings and vaccuum sealed in bags and then frozen.
It hasn't been all work and no fun. For our 32nd wedding anniversary, Tim bought me an ocarina.
It's a hand painted seedpod tenor G ocarina . It has a nice deep tone. It's from Songbird Ocarinas. I'm still learning the Native American flute and the tin whistle. The nice thing about this is it only uses your first 2 fingers and thumbs on each hand. I have arthritis in my hands and my ring fingers tend to lock up, making it hard to get them to cooperate when I want to lift them off of the holes.
The first song I learned to play was Popeye the Sailor Man. Yes, I learn culturally important music. I also learned Beethoven's 9th (Ode To Joy).
I need to relearn how to read music. I used to know how because I took violin lessons and guitar lessons in school. It shouldn't be that hard to relearn it. I hope.
So much to do, so little time. I guess I'd better get back to the onions while it's still cool. But I'd really like to be playing some musical instrument. I haven't even been making bread or cookies lately. I'm really falling down on the job.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07677610848002972808noreply@blogger.com0
